What makes Ennio The Genius really stand out is that it lets you experience two completely different realities.

On one side, there’s Ennio’s world, full of magical underwater adventures where Ennio is the great hero of the story. On the other, there’s the world of his brother Dannio; a more grounded, stressful world on land, where Ennio is seen as nothing more than a poor madman who’s lost his mind

Above, you can see a pretty complete character expression sheet created by the great Spundman.

On the right side of the image, you’ll find a few corrections from our lead animator, Juanma Laguna, who adjusted the character to make him more animation-friendly and easier to move.

To be honest, this project came out of resentment and frustration.

A few years ago, we were approached about possibly animating a Ren & Stimpy video game. We thought the idea was amazing, so we immediately started doing sketches and coming up with stories for those characters. We’d been dreaming about a project like that since the ’90s and then… well, sometimes things just don’t go the way you want.

So when we found out Ren & Stimpy wasn’t going to happen for us, we decided to create something of our own; something bigger, more iconic, and even funnier than that legendary MTV series. That’s how we ended up starting Ennio The Genius. From there, we made sure every character felt big, hilarious, and unforgettable. Spundman did an amazing job bringing to life the crazy ideas Enol and I kept throwing at him.

One of the biggest challenges in making the game was having every environment built twice, so we could portray the two different worlds we wanted to show.

Two worlds connected by the same physical reality, but interpreted in completely different ways by each of the two brothers.

But out of everything Ennio’s game has to offer, the most exciting part is definitely its combat system.

Enol Junquera came up with a style of combat I’d never really seen before in 2D, one that combines close-range fighting with a turn-based ‘magic’ charge system used to unleash spectacular summons. A lot of those summons work as gags, giving the game this real slapstick delicacy.

Others go into deeper territory, introducing iconic characters and revealing important pieces of the characters’ past.

As you can see, this summon brings back an old childhood friend of ours… complete with boxing gloves.
